Friends of Kerr Layen

Friends of Kerr Layen is a small organisation based in St Neots, Cambridgeshire supporting Kerr Layen in the Central River Region of The Gambia, following Covid-19 and the resulting loss of tourism and a faltering economy. The Gambia is still faced with extremely difficult time as Africa’s smallest country and way behind the developed world’s recovery.

Recent agricultural yield in the region has been poor and the work offers support to the village by providing emergency food aid and planning a path to food stability. The funding goes to directly focused project work, aiming to support the village in developing itself.

In 2021, Friends of Kerr Layen funded the delivery of 100 25kg sacks of quality rice- 13,000 individual portions – and, following consultation with the village Elders the next project was a plantation of five hectares of groundnuts for the 2021 harvest. This will underpin future agriculture planning and help sustain the community. The 2021 harvest was successful and yielded the equivalent of the emergency rice aid.

in 2022, over 200 community members planted over 500 cashew trees on four hectares of fenced land, designed to keep the plantation secure and protected from animals.

The Dorothy Foundation

The Dorothy Foundation aims to relieve poverty and look at ways of preventing violence in communities across West Africa. Our first area of work is the Rokel area which is east of Freetown, Sierra Leone. We have interested people in Ghana and Liberia who are also asking for us to work with them but lack of funding has prevented this so far. We aim to look at whole communities and work with local people to raise their living standards and give hope by involving them in decision making. In the Rokel area we are currently building a clinic and digging wells and developing a peace and education centre.
